Cranial Infant Corrective Helmet, Are They Kidding?

There has been a patent issued for a cranial infant corrective device, or helmet, for children with plagiocephaly (flattening of the cranium or head). Plagiocephaly can occur from the lay of the baby during pregnancy or the labor and delivery. The head becomes flattened on one side. Plagiocephaly can also occur from having the baby sleep on the same spot on the head. Many babies have a flattening of the skull in the back of the head or on one side of the head.

The patent was issued on July 15, 2003 for a helmet for the baby to wear putting pressure on the skull in various areas to reshape the skull! These are like being in a Frankenstein movie! To subject a baby to wear this archaic helmet, is to me, so ridiculous. I have seen so many babies and NEVER EVER had any problem with the head reshaping itself with chiropractic adjustments realigning the atlas and occiput (base of the skull and first vertebra of the neck), and chiropractic cranial or osteopathic cranial adjustments. The very activity of breastfeeding will help to move the skull bones in the right way to return the skull bones back to normalcy. The skull bones move when the baby breast feeds properly. To be honest this to me is horrifying!

The theory is that the bones are malleable until about 6 months when the bones begin to fuse. That is not the true physiology. If the bones fused the baby would die. The cranial bones are designed with sutures to move to pump the cerebral spinal fluid.

Does anyone study physiology and anatomy anymore? The skull bones do not fuse.
FYI-when midwives were delivering babies exclusively decades ago, they wouldn’t leave the birth until the baby’s head looked symmetrical and the baby was sucking and nursing properly. They did cranial and adjustments on the babies before they left the birth. They kept very bad notes and didn’t pass on their tech and what they did was lost. However, you can see a picture of a Mayan in a cave doing an intracranial adjustment on an infant about 5 or 6 months old on my website, www.healthyanswersonline.com by pulling up the archived newsletter for June 12, 2006. I think if the Mayans were doing this, then what I and my chiropractic colleagues are doing must have some merit!

Don’t put a helmet on your kids. Get chiropractic care and cranial adjustments and you will see a change on the first visit, and certainly after the natural correction has been made. Just fixing the outside to make it look good, doesn’t fix the inside and what has been altered because of the jammed or flattened sutures. Correct the problem, and the baby will not have repercussions from the physiological changes associated with the plagiocephaly.
